flynas Sustainability Performance in 2024: Partnership to Offset Carbon in Global Markets and Reduce Carbon Emissions by 625,152 Tons, Equivalent to Planting 25 Million Trees
Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – February 09, 2025: The performance of flynas, the leading low-cost airline in the world and the best LCC in the Middle East, in sustainability for the year 2024 showed progress on its three tracks: Decarbonization, adopting initiatives with sustainable impact on society, the economy and the environment, and digital transformation. As a result, operation efficiency increased, and carbon emissions decreased to 625,152 tons, equivalent to planting 25 million trees, within 48 months until the end of 2024. flynas also participated in launching the first voluntary carbon credit trading platform and in the third auction of high-quality carbon credits. Moreover, the leading LCC launched several initiatives to provide a more inclusive travel experience for different segments of society, including people with disabilities, which aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations. On the first track, flynas joined 22 major Saudi and international companies in the first voluntary carbon credit trading platform, launched by the Public Investment Fund's Regional Voluntary Carbon Market Company (RVCMC) on its first trading day last November. The platform aims to scale up the supply and demand of high-quality carbon credits across the Global South and beyond, drive financing for climate projects that require financing, and support the transition to net zero global emissions, in line with the goals of the Paris Conference of the Parties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions globally. Earlier in the year, flynas signed an agreement with the Regional Voluntary Carbon Market Company (RVCMC) to cooperate in the field of carbon offsetting, environmental protection, and sustainability, in line with the Kingdom's goals to reach net zero emissions by 2060. The partnership marked a qualitative addition to flynas' sustainability programs with the aim of ensuring that its initiatives align with national objectives to reduce carbon emissions and fulfil the Kingdom's commitments to the climate agreement. Meanwhile, the carbon emissions in the company operations were cut by more than 625 thousand tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) during 48 months, amounting to planting 25 million trees, thanks to flynas adoption of several initiatives and practices with a sustainable impact on preserving the environment. Fuel efficiency was maximized by upgrading 90% of the flynas fleet, which currently includes 53 aircraft of the next-generation A320neo, the most advanced single-aisle aircraft and the most efficient in operating engines and fuel consumption globally. Consequently, CO2 emissions were cut by an average of 13,024 tons per month, equivalent to planting 521,000 trees monthly, as the new aircraft are characterized by their efficiency in reducing fuel consumption by 25%, cutting CO2 emission by 21% per 100 kilometres compared to previous generation aircraft. Moreover, flynas has adopted technical solutions through partnerships with top international tech providers to monitor, analyse, and reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, which has contributed to enhancing the efficiency of flight operations. On the second track of adopting initiatives that have a sustainable impact on society, the company announced in January launching a more inclusive travel experience for all segments of society through initiating programs to train flight attendants in sign language and dealing with passengers with autism in cooperation with the Saudi Association for Hearing Impairment and the Saudi Autism Society, in the first initiative of its kind for an airline in the Kingdom. The programs included theoretical education and practical training for members of the air hospitality crews and ground service employees, with the aim of learning sign language to deal with deaf and hear-impaired passengers, ensuring that there is at least one crew member who is proficient in sign language on board all flynas flights. The programs also introduced the crew members to the best ways to deal with passengers with autism, ideally by learning about effective communication and interaction strategies. The training programs also included introducing participants to the characteristics of autism and how to interact with them, as well as training on providing a comfortable and supportive environment for passengers with autism, focusing on improving their travel experience. The leading LCC has also sponsored medical flights for passengers with autism spectrum disorder, in cooperation with the Society of Autism Families, on the occasion of the World Autism Day on April 2. For a whole year, flynas will provide travel vouchers on its flights for passengers with autism spectrum disorder and one companion for each, with up to 10 beneficiaries every month. Moreover, flynas is sponsoring 120 tickets for a year for treatment trips for breast cancer patients in cooperation with the Zahra Association. Furthermore, flynas sponsored the 6th Annual Forum for Families of People with Disabilities as the official carrier for the forum, organized by "Liajlehum Association for Disability" from December 2-4 in Madinah, in coincidence with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which falls on December 3. During December also, flynas launched a tree-planting initiative in Al-Malqa district and in Al-Rabi' district in Riyadh, where the company headquarters is located, with the contribution of the company's employees and in cooperation with Netzero company and the Riyadh Region Municipality represented by the North Riyadh Municipality. The initiative focuses on activating a tree planting project in collaboration with flynas employees. Each employee can plant one tree, and the company will contribute five trees in return, maximizing environmental impact. Participants will receive a certificate recognizing their contribution to environmental enhancement, along with a link to track their tree's growth and its positive impact on the ecosystem. Digital trees have many advantages, as the location of the tree, its growth stages, and the extent of its contribution to reducing carbon can be tracked digitally through a digital account for each donor, in partnership with Netzero, which connects companies with high-quality, community-driven afforestation projects that capture carbon and uses machine learning to estimate carbon offsets. Within the same track, and in a partnership with “SIRC”, the Saudi Investment Recycling Company, the number of recycled equipment reached about 400 pieces of machinery and equipment. n the third track of digital transformation, the company enhanced its digital services by launching the fourth generation of the flynas mobile application to enhance self-service options, providing travellers more flexibility in managing their trips with easy access to key services. Moreover, the leading LCC relaunched the flynas holidays platform, nasholidays, with the addition of six languages and more than 20 payable currencies, providing guests with an integrated platform to manage their travel and holiday packages and simplifying the travel planning process by providing a unified, integrated website for flynas guests to book flynas flights and hotels with the option to add transportation services, travel insurance, and other experiences and activities.
